Why
Why am I seeing this?
The Why control in the header turns labels on for the whole site. Each label names the rule and the data that produced that part of the page.
The control
Why sits in the header, next to consent. Pressed, it is on for every page until you press it again. With consent on, the choice is stored in this browser as site.why.v1. With consent off, it lasts for this view only and the labels say the rules were evaluated and not applied.
What a label contains
A home-page label says Applied or Not applied, the rule name, the explanation, and each signal’s label and value. Lab pages label the live demo with the rule that page actually used. Recommended next labels the count line, or the curated default when consent is off.
hero
The first matching arrival rule: campaign parameters, then search, social, a returning visitor, then the local time of day.
cta
Engaged reader, then scroll past 40 percent, then a returning visitor, then a campaign, otherwise the baseline. Night changes the second action.
recommendations
Topic affinity, then arrival reading, otherwise the notes stay in date order.
layout
A light page on a slow connection, a compact layout on a narrow viewport, otherwise the standard weight.
